Who else is sporting a pretty hefty root line right about now? Whoa mama, mine was starting to look crazy!
I'll start by saying I already color my hair at home the majority of the time. My hair grows too fast to keep up with salon visits and it's really hard to make time for 3+ hour chunks of time while managing a business, chasing 3 boys around and also having some sort of a social life.
So coloring at home is definitely my go-to.
That said, if you're looking to take advantage of the extra time on your hands and give at-home color a shot, you have come to the right place. I partnered with one of my personal favorites, Garnier Nutrisse, to break down the process step-by-step and share some of my favorite tips for coloring your hair at home. Best part? You don't have to leave the house.
First, we're going to head to garnierusa.com/my-shade-selector and take a 1 minute quiz to see what shade is best suited for the job.
Start the quiz by hitting the FIND YOUR SHADE button.
It's going to ask a series of questions based on your hair, your goals with color and then give you the option to try the colors on before buying or sending the results to your email.
Then, shop your color on Walmart.com & have it delivered to your door.
My color pick was Garnier Nutrisse Scarlett Ronze.
*Because I have so much hair, I usually need two boxes per application to make sure my hair is fully saturated and covered.
Next, we're going to get everything we need to start our application process.
1. Box(es) Of Garnier Nutrisse Scarlett Ronze
2. Baby Wipes or Makeup Removal Wipes to remove excess color from skin
3. Dark towel to dry hair.
Open your box and carefully read the instructions as you lay out your tools: Gloves, Wipes, Towel, and Ingredients.
Add the Color Créme to the Developer and make sure you squeeze allll of the product into the bottle. Every drop counts.
Now add the Fruit Oil Concentrate to help nourish your hair through the coloring process.
After your ingredients are in the bottle, place the cap back on your bottle.
Put your gloves on and cover the tip with your finger and shake until combined.
Tip: to avoid color staining your skin, apply some of the Nourishing After Conditioner to your hair line (front, sides and back). It makes clean up so much easier!
Time to get started!
Make sure your hair is thoroughly brushed through and then section your hair off. I start with a middle part.
Apply color to the part and use the tip to separate small sections of hair as you go down the front of your hair line, saturating your roots. Apply color directly to hair and gently massage in.
On the top: I go from middle part to left and then middle part to right.
After your front & side roots are covered, we start on the middle of the head before finally saturating the roots in the back of head. We're focusing on getting the roots fully saturated because they're the most important spot that needs coverage.
After your roots are fully saturated we start on applying the color to the rest of the hair. This is where you might need another box of color to help make sure all of your hair from roots to ends is fully covered.
After all of the color is applied, I (carefully) brush through my hair to make sure everything is evenly distributed at every angle.
All done and satisified? Great! Now you can take one of those makeup removal or baby wipes and gently remove all of the color that you might have gotten on your forehead, ears and back of neck.
Set the timer for 25-30 minutes!
I tend to go for closer to 25 because I have fine hair that picks up color quickly. If you have grey and more textured hair you can go to 30.
After your timer goes off, it's time to rinse.
Grab your After-Color Nourishing Conditioner and hit the shower.
Shampoo and rinse until the water is clear.
I use the entire bottle of conditioner - from roots to tips- and let sit for two minutes.
And finally, the end result.
Softer, silky, root-free hair...
(It feels so silky, smooth and nourished.)
Now you can sit back, relax, and look amazing while you catch up on your shows!
